If your concern is unusual color, odor, contamination or health risk, use appropriate water-quality guidance rather than assuming a softener solves it.
What are you actually seeing?
Note buildup on faucets, showerheads, glass or fixtures.
Mineral accumulation can affect equipment that regularly heats or uses water.
That is a filtration or water-quality question, not automatically a hardness problem.
Ask for testing and an explanation of what a proposed softener, filter or reverse-osmosis system is intended to address.
Ask these questions.
- What did the water test show?
- What specific problem will this system address?
- What ongoing salt, filter or maintenance costs apply?
- What warranty covers equipment and installation?
