HOME · ELECTRICAL

I have an
electrical problem.

A dead outlet can be minor; heat, smoke, sparks or a burning smell are not. Start by deciding whether this is safe to inspect at all.

STOP if you see smoke, sparks, scorching or exposed energized wiring.

Keep clear and use emergency help when there is fire or immediate danger. Do not remove panels or attempt live electrical work.

Safe observations

01One device or a whole area?

Unplug a suspect appliance if it can be done safely and note whether other outlets or lights are affected.

02Look, don’t dismantle

Notice tripped protection, unusual heat, odor or discoloration without opening electrical equipment.

03Repeated trips matter

A breaker that repeatedly trips is telling you there is a problem. Do not keep resetting it to force the circuit on.

04Protect the information

Tell the electrician what stopped working, when it began and what was running at the time.

BEFORE YOU HIRE

Ask these questions.

  • Is there a diagnostic/service-call fee?
  • Will you quote the repair before proceeding?
  • Does this require a permit or inspection?
  • What warranty covers the work?
