Do not handle unstable panes or reach through a damaged frame. If an opening cannot be safely secured, exposes the home to weather or creates an immediate security hazard, ask about emergency board-up. For an active crime or immediate danger, use emergency services.
What happened?
A glass company can confirm whether the pane or insulated glass unit can be replaced while keeping the existing frame.
Shattered or missing glass may need temporary board-up or securing before the permanent glass is measured and installed.
If the window or door frame is bent, broken or pulled away, tell the provider before dispatch. The scope may extend beyond replacing glass alone.
Glass/board-up can close the opening, but wet drywall, flooring or insulation may also need drying and restoration.
Describe the opening, not just “broken window.”
- Say whether it is a window, sliding/patio door, entry-door glass or other building glass.
- Ask whether they handle residential building glass; auto glass is a separate service.
- If urgent, confirm whether board-up/temporary securing is available and what the dispatch fee covers.
- For permanent replacement, ask whether the quote includes glass, measurement, installation and cleanup.
